Huffington Post: A-Sides

August 27, 2013

Jesse stopped by A-Sides recently to perform a song and chat about his new album with Jon Chattman. Check out the write-up here and the videos below.

“Borne Away” is “unlike any other record I’ve done before”

It’s been only about 11 months since Jesse Harris released “Sub Rosa,” his 2012 album featuring guest appearances by several of his musical friends, including Norah Jones and Conor Oberst. But in the past year, while touring behind “Sub Rosa,” Harris entered another creative period. He wrote a new batch of songs — about 30, to be exact — and decided he had more than enough good material to record another album.

JesseHarris-BorneAway-CDHappy Summer Everybody! Today is the official release of my new album Borne Away. It is, without a doubt, the most intimate recording I’ve ever made. I didn’t think I would go back into the studio so soon after Sub Rosa, but last year was an especially fruitful one for songs. As a matter of fact, this album represents only half of what was recorded. Perhaps a volume two will appear one day!  In the meantime, I’d love if you ordered a copy. I’m releasing it on my label Secret Sun Recordings in the States (with Hillstone in Japan and Som Livre in Brazil) and every sale helps a lot. It’s available on vinyl, digital, and CD. There are also still copies left of the limited Japanese edition, so grab one while you can – it’s a beautiful signed-and-numbered hardcover book with the cd, extra illustrations by Asuka Ohsawa, full lyrics, and liner notes by painter Nicholas Weber.

If you’re in New York City tonight, join me for the album release gig with Julian Lage, Anthony Wilson, and Bill Dobrow at Rockwood Music Hall at 9pm. $10 tickets can be purchased here.

We also have a show Saturday at the amazing art center in Red Hook, Pioneer Works, that will also feature sets by Charlotte Kemp Muhl, Margaret Glaspy, and Julian Lage.

All the best!

Today the site Nowness premieres the video for Borne Away, the title track from my new album. I teamed up again with Charlotte Kemp Muhl, who is also the guest vocalist on the recording, and photographer Lyle Owerko. Last summer we made a series of iPhone videos together, in which Charlotte played The Succubus or The Girl. This time she and Lyle co-directed. While those videos were edited by me in iMovie, we decided for this one to work with a pro, and Lyle introduced us to his friend Thomas Vogt, longtime editor of South Park and other amazing works, such as Team America. “Is it funny?” You may ask. Not really. But comedy requires timing, and Tom brought that in spades. No need to explain it further. Please take a look, and if you like it, spread it around.

The album is also available for pre-order today: on vinyl (with download card), cd digipak, digital, or as a signed-and-numbered special Japanese limited edition – a beautiful hard-cover bound art book with the cd, featuring extra illustrations by Asuka Ohsawa (illustrator of the album cover), all the lyrics, and liner notes by painter (and friend) Nicholas Weber. There are only 100 copies of those, so if you’d like one, order now. PRE-ORDER NOW!

The official release date is June 25, which I’ll celebrate with a series of shows around New York City and upstate, with Julian Lage and Anthony Wilson on guitars and Bill Dobrow on percussion.  Our first appearance will be at Rockwood Music Hall on Tuesday, June 25 (get $10 tickets here). On the 27th we’ll play a house concert in New Paltz, New York. And on the 29th we’ll perform in the garden at Pioneer Works, a vast and impressive new museum/artist space in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Finally, on the 30th, Bill and I will play duo at the Tin Roof Sessions in New Paltz on a double bill with Margaret Glaspy.

I am writing you from Japan, where I’m on tour with Vinicius Cantuaria and Dadi. Being in Japan is, as always, a heightening of the senses, as well as a musical journey. Vinicius, Dadi and I are sharing the stage, each accompanying the other, playing everything from originals to covers of Jorge Ben and Antonio Carlos Jobim. If you’re in Japan, please come out to our shows this week. It’s been a blast. We’ll play Hiroshima tomorrow, Osaka the 30th, Kyoto the 31st, and the last one at Duo Music Exchange in Shibuya, Tokyo on June 3.

Thanks and see you soon!

All the best,

Japan Tour in May!

In May I’ll tour Japan with two great friends from Brazil, Vinicius Cantuaria and Dadi. We recently played three nights in Rio and had a great time. I look forward to seeing everybody in Japan again soon! – Jesse
